Mr Ray Steinwall (as at March 2009)
Ray Steinwall is General Counsel for the Novartis Group of companies in Australia and New Zealand. In 2008 he was appointed as a member of the Australian Competition Tribunal and the Commonwealth Consumer Affairs Advisory Council (CCAAC).
He holds qualifications in law and economics and is a solicitor of the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of New South Wales. For over 20 years he has provided legal and policy advice to governments and companies on competition, consumer protection, commercial law, pricing, access and regulation. He has served on and consulted to committees that have undertaken reviews of industry and competition.
His previous appointments include General Counsel with the pricing, industry and economic regulator – the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal of New South Wales; associate director in the regulation group of PricewaterhouseCoopers and associate for a number of Australian law firms. During the mid 1990’s he was principal policy adviser with The Cabinet Office of New South Wales where he was responsible for implementation of the National Competition Policy in NSW, including access and industry regulation of electricity, gas, rail, water and ports.
He is a visiting fellow in competition law in the Faculty of Law at the University of New South Wales. He is also a member of the Trade Practices Committee of the Law Council of Australia.
He is the founding editor and general editor of the Competition and Consumer Law Journal and has published widely on competition, consumer law and regulation.
